Introducing...Cora Makes! The words 'graphic' & 'design' never really sat well with me, it just seemed too 'designy' too 'graphicky', you get me? What does it even mean ANYWAY?!
Well, according to Wiki; Graphic design is the process of visual communication and problem-solving through the use of typography, photography, and illustration. OK, that pretty sums up exactly what I do. So why ain't it for me? I went to this thing in Milton Keynes, a thing where you sit in a room and you watch a PPT presentation and a lady (or man) talks about business and marketing and social media and all that jazz. It was one of the better one's I have been to, to be fair. The lady (this time it was a lady) spoke - amongst other things - about growth mindset and Carol Dweck (she's super cool if you want to check her out) which is unusual, and as a fan of the CD I was impressed they linked her ideas and process to business. Common sense I guess. Ain't it always! Any hoo, one of the things the lady also spoke about was the 60 second pitch. I dislike the word pitch in that context; pitch fork is cool, black as pitch, also cool, pitch as a perceptual property of sound, super cool. A pitch as a thing you do to people to make them buy a product, just makes me feel a bit icky. Snob, probs? Idiot? Defo. Well, one of the parameters they used to So, I deleted the majority of my social media accounts...Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn...and it feels SO good. I have decided my time is better spent drawing, designing, creating, making & learning. Most importantly; getting better at what I do rather than constantly worrying about content for my posts.
I know it’s odd & maybe a little perverse but I’m not doing it as a act of self sabotage, it’s more an act of freedom. I was getting lost in the process, the pretence & the pretending. I am sure millions of people have genuine content they feel passionate about, I was just having to try so hard to find it that when I did find it it didn’t mean anything at all. I might change my mind...I may go running back, arms outstretched like a lost lover, I might never engage again...who knows. Right now, it’s a YES YES YES. I did it. I deleted all my social media accounts, bar Instagram. Why? Well, I will tell you when I know. Love you! X
